Beauty Review – October Birchbox

I thought I’d better get my Birchbox review for this month done before November rolls around!

This month, I had the choice between the Stylist Guest Editor Box or the Back to Basics Box. I had a quick look at the contents of each and there was one product that swayed it for me…

The Back to Basics Box contained a bottle of Seche Vite, my holy grail topcoat that I have only just run out of. I thought it would save me an online order plus postage to choose the box with a fresh bottle inside so I opted for this sleek navy Birchbox.

As well as the bottle of Seche Vite, it contained several ‘beauty essentials’ for eyes, hair, teeth and face.

First up, a duo from the brand Beaver (snigger…)

I received a moisturising shampoo and matching conditioner which my dyed hair is always in need of.

Next, a tube of toothpaste from Regenerate. Not something I can get too excited about but useful nonetheless.

From Eyeko, I got the Fat Liquid Eyeliner in Black. Now, this is a brand that people have raved about ever since the Alexa Chung collaboration but I just don’t see the fuss with their eyeliners! I don’t find the black to be dark enough and the staying power on me is poor.

I am always open to having my mind changed though so will give this eyeliner a go however on first impressions, it seems rather chunky to get that thin, cat-eye flick I like.

Last of all, a mini bottle of Bioderma. I usually use the pink one (for sensitive skin) but this is the Hydrabio H20 which claims to have more hydrating qualities for dull, dry skin. I don’t find a huge amount of difference between the two but both are lovely to use and great at removing make-up from the skin quickly.

Overall, a pretty good box this month. I was going to buy another bottle of Seche Vite anyway so I’m glad that was included and the rest of the items are all interesting to trial.

Beauty Review – October Birchbox

I’ve had a lovely few days with my parents. We’ve shopped non-stop and yes, I have started to make a dent in my Christmas shopping…too soon?!

My Dad and I also took over the kitchen last night and cooked an epic array of tapas dishes including scallops with bacon and honey, prawn fishcakes, calamari, cod fritters, chicken and chorizo and warm crusty bread…delicious and only a few arguments between the chefs!

I received this month’s Birchbox a little while ago but after having a quick peek upon arrival, I’ve only just got around to having a play with the contents.

Partnered with CoppaFeel for Breast Cancer Awareness month, an issue close to my heart, I was pleased to see a focus on health and wellbeing in the accompanying literature.

First of all, I was happy to see a pretty pink bag instead of the usual drawstring one. This is a lovely size for travelling and I will use it for our mini-break to London next week.

And here are this month’s goodies:

First up a moisturising lip balm from Pixi. I like this brand and it’s nice that there is a hint of colour in this balm which smells lovely and is packed with things to make your lips soft as the colder months hit us.

Next, a KMS dry wax spray. A good brand but not a product that I think will work on my hair. Luckily, I can gift it to Ian to try!

An interesting little product next – a cooling gel lotion to treat ingrown hairs and redness after shaving or hair removal from Shaveworks. This is not something I would seek out to buy but useful to have in the bathroom cabinet nonetheless.

A fun little extra now in the form of this pen shaped like a lipstick. This is just a tad too girly for me so I’ve passed it on to my Mum.

I love facial lotions and serums, basically anything that promises to add a glow and moisturise, so was pleased to see this tube of Glowing Serum by Meaningful Beauty. With Cindy Crawford’s name on the bottle, I’ll give it a go to look as good as she does at her age!

Finally, two generous sachets of Cattier’s Pink Clay Face Mask. I have seen several pink clay products that claim to do wonders for your skin so will try this out as part of my usual Sunday routine which usually involves a long, bubble bath with a face and hair mask (if I find the time!)

Overall, a nice little box for October. I love the face masks, Pixi balm and serum and various family members can make use of the other bits…sharing the love this month!

Beauty Review – October Birchbox

The end is in sight for the end of term! It was my last day with my class today and I just have one training day to get through tomorrow then have 11 days off, a hotel break and lots of time with my family and friends to look forward to. Unfortunately the weather is meant to be pretty miserable so no lovely autumnal walks but I can predict all that walking will be replaced with cooking and baking instead…fun but not so good for the waistline!

This month’s Birchbox seems to be another corker. There seems to be more and more monthly beauty boxes on the market now but for me Birchbox seems to be the best out there in terms of brands and value for money, allowing me to justify this monthly treat.

Here was my first peek at this month’s box which has a ‘Beauty Buzz’ theme, celebrating all those products that everyone seems to be talking about. The Birchbox magazine also seems to have been replaced by a series of postcards, each with a different article, beauty tutorial or product on the back of it.

Right, onto the goodies…

First up is KMS California’s Curl Up Wave Foam Mousse. Being a curly-haired girl, I am always on the lookout for products that tame the frizz without leaving my hair feeling sticky or crunchy. KMS is an amazing hair brand but I have horrible memories of using mousse when I was a teenager which left me with rather fetching wet-look hair! I am hoping this gel-to-mousse product will change my mind about mousse again. I have used this once and am so far impressed and it smells amazing so I will persevere!

Next is Dr Brandt’s Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant. This sounds harsher on your skin than it actually is. This is a face scrub to be used a couple of times a week and I really like the fresh, invigorating lemon scent it has.

My least favourite product in this month’s box is these Birchbox eyelash curlers. Priced at £10, they are perfectly functional and do what they are meant to do but I’m sure everyone already owns a pair of these so I think it was a bit of a lazy addition.

A product I have never heard of but am intrigued to try is this Egyptian Magic. I received three sachets of this cult multi-purpose cream, made with all natural ingredients but some rather interesting packaging! This balm is meant to be rubbed in your hands until it turns to a light oil then can be used on the skin or hair to moisturise.

Next is Dr Lipp’s Nipple Balm which believe it or not began life as a nipple cream before someone realised it also worked wonders on your lips. This is like a thick Vaseline and is great for this time of year as the weather gets colder – a perfect size to pop in my handbag.

The make-up item this month was Stainiac by theBalm cosmetics. I love their blushers but had never tried their lip and cheek stains. Obviously, a product like this will always be compared to Benefit’s Benetint but I do like this. It doesn’t have amazing staying power on the lips but as a cheek stain this is a good product.

Finally, I have saved the best until last with Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer Radiance. If I had a pound for every time a beauty blogger raved about this brand, I would be a very rich girl! Sometimes you wonder what all the fuss is about but I am truly in love with this product. The primer is slightly tinted but applies like a dream and gives you a beautiful dewy base. If you have clear skin then you could get away with wearing this on its own as it blurs any imperfections and leaves your skin looking great but without being too shimmery. Although a little on the pricey side, I will buy this product again when this tube runs out as it is really is fab!

So there you have it for another month – a good range of products this time with some brands I love. I hear there will be another Laura Mercier product in the next Birchbox so I will wait with baited breath!
