Beauty Review – May Birchbox

I’m a bit late reviewing this month’s box but it’s another good’un so better late than never!

My first thought when I opened the box was that it had a really cool design on it but was a bit plain…I soon realised why and how it linked into this month’s creative theme of ‘Free Your Mind’. Here was my first peek inside:

The ‘little something extra’ in the box this month was a pack of colouring pencils, allowing you to personalise the lid of your box (there’s a mini competition running on this too). Adult colouring books are having a moment so this concept feeds in really well to that idea of making some time for yourself. I am currently into cross stitching to unwind in the evening so I’m not sure I will colour in my box but I do like the idea behind it.

Right, onto the beauty items! I love a good hair mask and this one from Number 4 looks lovely. The Lumiere d’hiver Reconstructing Masque contains some amazing ingredients and is designed to leave your hair smooth, strengthened and shiny.

Next a nail varnish from Wah London, a brand I am hearing more and more about after discovering their nail art. There was an option to receive a nail varnish, nail art pen or press on nails and I’m glad I got to try out one of their polishes. I had the shade The Blue Room, a vibrant yet slightly creamy coloured blue. I have just bought a similar shade so kind of wish I had another colour but that’s not their fault so I will give this a go and report back.

A brand whose skincare I really like, I received a Caudalie tinted moisturiser. I am a big fan of these in the summer when you don’t want to wear too heavy a base on your face and this comes with a good SPF which is always a bonus. Unlike most other formulas, this smells amazing and the coverage isn’t bad either.

I always welcome a face mask and this one from Absolution looks and smells lovely. It is called the Youth Activator Mask so sounds as though it is aimed at my skin type and aims to add a burst of moisture.

Next a product that I wasn’t that excited about but Ian will definitely use – Parlor’s Moisturising Sea Salt Spray. I just don’t use anything like salt spray on my hair but Ian is a fan and the fact that this contains almond oils means it shouldn’t be as drying as other formulas are.

Finally, a make-up item from Jelly Pong Pong (I love this name!) I received the Caribbean Sun Bronzer in the shade Martinique which looks perfect for my pale skin. It is a duo that contains a matt bronzer and a shimmery pink blusher. The palette is a little bit small to get a big brush into but I imagine that swirling the colours together would create a lovely glow too. I like that the compact has a mirror and on first impressions the blusher looks like the real winner – the bronzer is a tad on the chalky side for me.

Overall, I really like this month’s box. My stand-out product is the Caudelie tinted moisturiser and I am excited to try it out properly this week.

Beauty Review – June Birchbox

I was going to try to avoid mentioning football today after last night’s result but then I found myself with this World Cup themed Birchbox to review so quickly realised it was kind of unavoidable!

I was very excited when I saw this arrive on my doorstep and I think the BB team have managed to make a good link with the tournament and beauty products, focusing on ‘Global Strikers’, that is products from brands around the world.

I loved the Brazil-inspired bag and here is my first peek at the contents:

First up, Silk + Honey’s Shea Butter Hair Mask. I love a good hair mask once a week and this looks and smells divine. I’m not a huge fan of the packaging as I find I get loads of water in these style tubs when I am using the product in the shower but as soon as I finish my current hair mask I will be giving this a trial.

Next, a body lotion from Naobay, a Spanish brand. This has a fresh lemon scent which is lovely for the summer but it is quite strong so may not be to everyone’s taste.

I have heard amazing things about this cult French brand, Embyolisse, but haven’t yet got my hands on one of their products. This moisturiser is meant to work wonders…it is just a shame the sample size is so small!

Next up, the item I was the least impressed with…a Birchbox flip-flop key ring. Now I love my Havaianas but do I need one on a keyring?! Just no.

A lipstick next by Yves Rocher. I was disappointed when I saw the shade I received (Marron Glacé) as it is not one I would ever choose and reminds me of bad 90s lipstick. However, it is a sheer lipstick which doesn’t come out nearly as dark as the tube would suggest. This is infused with cherry oil so smells delicious and feels lovely on the lips but the colour is a real let-down for me.

Finally, I was excited to see an OPI product included – one of my favourite nail brands – and when it said it was inspired by tropical Brazil I was imagining a bright neon shade so I feel a bit disappointed with this one. I’m not sure of the shade name as the miniature bottles don’t have them printed, but it is a rather dull purple-grey shimmer. Obviously, being OPI the formula is great but again I’m not too keen on the colour.

I feel like I have been raving about Birchbox over the past few months but this month’s box is a bit rubbish really! I saw that other bloggers have received a Beauty Blender and Caudelie Divine Oil in theirs which adds to my annoyance as I would love either of those over my lipstick, nail varnish or keyring!

I do like the fact that Birchbox have tried to make a link to the World Cup but quite frankly, the inclusion of a keyring in a woman’s beauty box is a bit naff and if I wasn’t into football I’d feel even more miffed!

Hopefully this is just a blip for Birchbox…in true teacher form I would say it was an average effort and they need to try harder next time! x

Beauty Review – Rainforest Hair Butter by The Body Shop

Let me start by wishing you all a Happy St. George’s Day! It has been a beautiful sunny day today and I love having the type of job where I can just move everything outside if the sun is shining!

I have joined a Pilates class and it was my first session last night. Being one of the younger people there, I naively thought I would find it somewhat of a breeze but I was put to shame by some of the women there and I’m aching slightly today! I am hoping it will get easier over the weeks and I will slowly get a bit more supple.

Today, I wanted to share my latest Sunday night treat for my hair. We quite often treat ourselves to a face mask when our skin needs a boost but don’t always think of doing the same with our hair.

If, like me, you have your hair highlighted regularly then it’s really important to give it a moisture boost to avoid dryness and keep the colour bright and shiny.

I have been trialling this hair mask by The Body Shop and I am really pleased with the results. It applies really easily after shampooing and, like all Body Shop products, this smells amazing.

I am only using this once a week as it is very rich, but it leaves my curls really shiny, tangle-free and bouncy and is a nice weekly treat to chase away those Sunday Blues!
