Five Friday Favourites #19

Dobble

IMG_0953

My friend Lucie came to stay last weekend and brought this highly addictive card game with her. It’s a really simple concept but is really fun to play and you can’t help but get really competitive…a definite for family gatherings!

Coffee and Tonic

IMG_0958

Yep, you read that correctly. Apparently the new hipster drink is a shot of espresso over ice topped up with tonic water. I was fully expecting to hate this but there is something really tasty and refreshing about the combination of the two drinks.

Rose Serum

IMG_0981

I received this Aromatica serum in a Birchbox and have been using it for about a week. It’s really lovely and hydrating and sinks in quickly. I wish it had a pump as it’s a bit of a pain tipping the gel-like liquid onto my hands but that’s the only criticism I have.

Red Shoes

IMG_0982

I love a red accessory and I have been slowly breaking in these red leather sandals my mum brought me back from Spain. They are smart enough for work and really comfortable but…they have dyed my feet red the first few times of wearing them!

Toronto

Finally, Ian and I have booked another holiday! We are off to Toronto and Niagara Falls for a week in October. I found a really good deal with BA and am really looking forward to my first visit to Canada,

Five Friday Favourites #17

Blood Brothers

It feels like ages ago that I booked these tickets for my parents’ Christmas present but the weekend finally rolled around to go and see this show in Bristol. It is my favourite musical and we all really enjoyed it. We had a fab day in the sunshine walking along the Harbourside, enjoying cocktails and eating pizza.

The Longs Arms

Another mention for mine and Ian’s favourite pub! We went up here for dinner last night as, and usual, it was stunning. We shared starters of lobster and a goats meat scotch egg then I had lemon sole while Ian had the lamb. I always look forward to pudding and seeing what crazy flavour of ice-cream is on the menu and this time we sampled root beer, cream soda, Nutella, peanut butter and jam and – my new favourite – Jaffa Cake.

New Earrings

I rediscovered these earrings that my best friend Lu bought me for my birthday. They are lovely silver swallows and I have been wearing them all week.

Becca Highlighter

IMG_0877

This week, I have been really enjoying wearing the Shimmering Skin Perfector by Becca in the shade Moonstone as recommended by The Anna Edit. I like how natural this looks and I really do think it suits paler complexions.

Sliders

I have been after a pair of pool sliders since last summer. I saw these in Primark and I thought they looked really fun and they are actually really comfortable. It’s one of the first times that I have stopped to wonder whether I am too ‘old’ for an item of clothing but then realised I didn’t really care and headed to the tills!

Five Friday Favourites #13

New Brogues

IMG_0462

I treated myself to a new pair of brogues for work. These are the ASOS Mai suede brogues are a little more pointed than my last pair. I love the preppy look they give and they are really comfortable too which is a must when you are on your feet all day.

Nut Butter

IMG_0506

The humble peanut now has some competition in the nut butter stakes – I love almond and cashew butter on my morning oats and this one from Pip and Nut is delicious!

A Cream Blusher

IMG_0518

Not something I usually use but this cream blusher from Rimmel in the shade Radiant Rose gives a lovely, natural wash of rosy colour and blends in really well. Sometimes a powder blusher can feel like it is just sitting on top of your make-up whereas this product really feels like part of your base.

Vans Sunglasses

Now I am usually loyal to my Ray Ban collection (Clubmasters and Wayfarers being my favourite styles) but this pink pair from Vans have been my first choice recently. A gift from my bestie Lu, these are a really fun pop of colour and have a cool, retro shape too.

Midweek Wagamamas

IMG_0524

In the run-up to our all-inclusive holiday in a few weeks, we tried to be really good this week making healthy meals, going to the gym and limiting our treats at night. I don’t really ‘diet’ but I know we will be eating and drinking a lot when we’re away so I wanted to offset that a little bit! However, on Thursday night I was devoid of inspiration for something healthy and tasty so we popped to Wagamamas for some delicious new beef buns and a steaming bowl of noodles.

Latest Purchases #111 – A Primark Haul

What a beaut of a weekend! The sun was out and the clocks changed which means lighter mornings and evenings which are guaranteed to improve my mood.

Last weekend, I popped into Primark to hunt out the silver Gucci-inspired loafers I have seen everywhere and of course, picked up a few more items…

Here are the silver shoes I wanted. I am still wearing them in but think they will be perfect for Spring.

I love Primark’s loungewear and pyjamas. I find they are made of super-soft cotton which hang beautifully and are really loose and comfortable. I picked up a couple of cosy tops to wear in the evenings or as pyjamas.

On the pyjama theme, I bought this silky black pair of pjs which feel quite luxurious on.

IMG_0491

This top was probably my favourite purchase of the lot and one that I think encapsulates a lot of this season’s trends in the embroidery and the flared sleeves. I ended up getting this a couple of sizes bigger as I wanted quite a loose, almost floaty fit.

I really liked the colours in this knitted jumper and I think it looks more expensive than it was. Again, I sized up as a I wanted a baggy, over-sized fit and this looks great with jeans.

IMG_0496

I am after some green leaf prints for our bedroom and this cacti one is a good start. I may collate a gallery wall of sorts and I like the colours and gold detail on this print.

IMG_0495

I am slowly replacing all of my old mismatched hangers with these slim, copper ones so I picked up another 4 packs of these. It’s amazing how much more I can fit in my wardbrobe and they look really nice too.

IMG_0492

Whilst in the home section, I picked up a candle and reed diffuser. They definitely don’t have the strongest scent but do offer a subtle fragrance to a room.

Finally, a little at-the-till purchase of these coconut chips. I am trying to snack healthier at the moment and not reach for the biscuits and these coconut chips are really tasty.

Five Friday Favourites #12

Apologies for being a day late with this but I was watching Comic Relief last night. Apart from the Love Actually bit, I was shocked at how bad it was this year – completely unfunny, awful sound quality, a disinterested audience and a general chaotic feeling…was that just me?! Obviously, I donated and still think it’s a great cause but they seemed almost apologetic about sending money to Africa with a lot more focus on UK charities which I think is a sad reflection of how they think much of the county feels at the moment. Anyway, onto my weekly highlights…

New Hair

I had a long-overdue cut and colour at the weekend and it feels great. I got quite a lot cut off which I usually do in Spring although it’s just a little too short to tie up when I’m having a bad hair day.

Thaikhun

Ian and I enjoyed a great lunch here. The Bath branch is set up like a Thai street market but the actual food is lovely too – I highly recommend the little fish cakes.

Silver Shoes

I have loved the Gucci-style silver loafers for a while but they are quite a statement piece to pull off. I spotted these in Primark so decided to give them a go. They have creased a little whilst wearing them in but I’m looking forward to wearing them as the weather improves.

The Replacement

I really enjoyed this BBC drama. I thought the actual ending was a little weak but I was captivated throughout and it raised some interesting points of view on maternity leave.

New Bedding

I have a bit of a grey, green and copper theme for our bedroom and this bedding is perfect (it was a bargain too at £12 for the set).

Five Friday Favourites #10

Phew this has felt like a long old week! However, there have been some highlights…

Holidays

IMG_0398

This week, I have booked not one, but two holidays for the next few months: a Spanish jaunt with Ian and a trip to Croatia with my Mum to celebrate a special birthday together. Just knowing they are in the diary has made me feel so much more positive – we even went out for burgers last night to celebrate!

Night Masks

IMG_0352

I am a big fan of these ‘sleeping masks’ and I have been using this Rose one from Sephora this week. I manage to make one of these pods last a few days and my skin has felt softer and more plumped in the mornings.

This Country

I have discovered a new comedy and it is so spot on if you grew up in a rural setting! Ian and I have giggled non-stop at this and recommended it to several friends.

Memory Foam Slippers

m

These beauties from Primark have not left my feet and are so comfortable. They must be my 5th or 6th pair and I love them.

Mac ‘n’ Cheese

IMG_0385

I made my Mac ‘n’ Cauliflower Cheese this week and it was even better than I remembered! I made a huge batch which made a couple of dinners for us and was a delicious treat.

Sunday Summary #43

Life

I have one more week of term left which means a mad rush to fit everything in then we are off to Boston! If you are a regular reader of this blog then you will know my love for visiting America. I haven’t been to Boston before so am planning to fit in as much as possible and have spent a chunk of today booking us in for various things and, of course, finding the best place for East Coast chowder and lobster rolls!

Ian and I have been enjoying Scandi dramas a lot lately. We are watching The Bridge and also watched the film ‘The Keeper of Lost Causes’ last night which was great…any other recommendations?

Food

I’m a real grazer so always looking for new snacks, especially healthy ones. Now these aren’t perfect but they are a bit better for you than crisps and taste delicious.

img_8290

We had a really disappointing dinner out this week at the newly renovated Dandy Lion in Bradford on Avon. I don’t like to bash local businesses but this was slow service, coupled with a really bad burger and I won’t be revisiting to make the same mistake twice.

img_8324

Fashion

I bought a new pair of boots for this Autumn/ Winter. These black leather ankle boot have  cool tassle on side to add a bit of detail and look good with jeans or tights and a dress.

img_8328

There are so many nice knitted jumpers around at the moment and I opted for this leopard print number from H&M. it is heavy enough to keep you warm, has a nice zip detail at the back and is a cool, loose boxy shape so looks great with a pair of black skinny jeans…I love it!

Beauty

My nails are finally getting back to a decent length and condition so I decided to indulge in a bit of nail art. I spotted this nude and navy spotted look on Lena Dunham and am really pleased with how they turned out.

img_8325

Finally, I have been using this Lancome duo this week and both are lovely. The serum is quite a wet formula but feels very hydrating. The moisturiser however is the real star. I think it is aimed at slightly more mature skin than mine but it leaves my face feeling as smooth as if I had applied a primer and my foundation sits well on it. I may keep an eye open for this at Duty Free next week…

Sunday Summary #41

Life

It has been the perfect, crisp autumnal day today and I am praying this weather holds out for the rest of the week as I’m off on a residential trip with school and I am not a fan of standing about in the rain for hours on end!

This week I have been over to Bristol twice. Once to watch Bristol City with my bestie Lu (we won and we had Cornish pasties and hot chocolate with cream!) and again on Friday to watch Romesh Ranganathan who was brilliant.

img_8189

I’ve also had a hen do this weekend which involved learning the Thriller dance and dressing up followed by a girlie day with my Mum, shopping, lunching and attending a fashion show…a pretty great weekend!

img_8229

Food

Before watching Romesh, Ian and I tried out Beerd at the Colston Hall which specialises in craft beer and pizza. I had a lovely calzone and will try to write a proper review soon.

I also made a delicious apple crumble which we even enjoyed for breakfast one morning…pudding for breakfast should be a thing!

img_8192

Beauty

I finally got around to reviewing my latest Birchbox this week and have enjoyed playing around with the Model Co highlighting trio.

img_8202

I’ve also been testing a new cleanser. I picked up this one from Boscia which is an oil that emulsifies on contact with water. It is gentle but effective at removing my eye make-up and I may pick up a full-sized one when we visit the States (and a Sephora!) later this month.

Fashion

I picked up a new pair of brogues in Matalan last weekend and have been wearing them non-stop. They are quite masculine in design but are comfy, go with everything and I have had lots of compliments on them too.

Finally, I am feeling quite inspired fashion-wise at the moment as I attended the final show of Bristol Fashion Week at Cribbs Causeway this afternoon. Presented by Henry Holland, it showed you really accessible ways to wear the current trends and I *think* I may have found my new winter coat too! FYI, the trends to look out for in Autumn/ Winter include: military, sports luxe, oversized, pastels, gothic, mismatching prints, animal print (especially leopard) and velvet. I really loved this fashion show and we got a great goodie bag too!

Sunday Summary #35

Life

It has been my last full week at home before I go back to work so I have been enjoying some fairly chilled out afternoons, cooking, reading and making the most of my last few lie-ins.

This weekend, despite being rather cold, grey and rainy (autumn anyone?!), has been really fun. Yesterday, I went for lunch then to watch Bristol City play…and sadly lose. Then Ian and I watched The Martian and forced ourselves to stay awake to cheer on Mo Farah – I’m going to miss the Olympics when they finish.

We finished watching the second series of Scandal and it just got so bad we have abandoned it and aren’t going to watch Series 3. A shame, as it started well but just got so far-fetched in the end. We have started watching a British drama called The Five and so far, it is gripping.

Today, we went for burgers then to watch the new David Brent film, Life on the Road. It was hilarious and moving in equal measure – the song lyrics especially make me cringe and laugh.

I am off on holiday next week with Ian and one of our best friends so have been busy researching things to do and see. We are doing a mini-Scandinavian cruise stopping off in Sweden, Estonia, Russia and Finland and I cannot wait!

We had some sad news this week too – our village pub, The Muddy Duck, which we go to on a weekly basis is closing down. We were gutted when we read the notice on the door and Ian was on about moving as we love having a good pub in the village! I’m hoping a buyer is found soon and it doesn’t have to close but I am so sad it is changing hands and have so many good foodie memories there.

Our new bed arrived this week and it’s copper! I think it looks beautiful and I will write up a mini room tour in a few weeks when our new furniture and accessories have arrived…copper and leaf prints will feature heavily.

IMG_7503

Finally, I listened to Nadiya Hussain’s Desert Island Discs (last year’s Bake Off winner) and it moved me to tears. I already loved her but hearing her talk about the struggles she faces as a British Muslim and how she deals with it in such a dignified way was very moving.

Food

Is it just me, or do you find a food that you love then eat nothing but that until you are sick of it?! Well, I have discovered this honey flavoured Greek yogurt and have had it with blueberries every morning for the past week and am so obsessed I have 4 more tubs of it in my fridge.

IMG_7540

Alongside the yogurt, I have also been having these rose and pineapple flavoured toasted sesame seeds my friend Lucie picked up for me at a food market. These seeds are delicious and really go with my new favourite breakfast.

Beauty

I had a big clear out of my nail varnish collection this week and blogged about it. I honestly thought most people had this many bottles too but a few comments on social media have alerted me I have a bit of a problem!

IMG_7507

I’m not usually that fussy with shower gels – I tend to pick something that smells nice but this one from Dove is lovely to use. It is so luxurious and creamy and my skin feels really soft and moisturised after using it.

IMG_7593

I had managed to rack up a fair few Birchbox point (little tip – always do the quick reviews online to add to your points total!) so bought myself another tube of Model Co More Brows. I love this stuff as it not only adds colour to my fair brows but also contains microfibers to fill in any gaps.

IMG_7592

Fashion

I blogged about my new summer sandals this week and have been wearing them all trying to decide which are the comfiest pair to take on holiday with me next week.

IMG_7542

I ordered some new rings this week. I flit between gold and silver jewellery and I love these chunky, silver cut-out rings.

Latest Purchases #99 – Summer Footwear

Over the past few months, I have bought a few new pairs of sandals to add to my summer wardrobe so thought I’d round them up and put together a little footwear haul. They’re mainly casual but I also invested in one summer party/ wedding essential.

First up, a pair of leopard print mules from La Redoute. I loved these sandals since seeing them on one of my favourite bloggers, Hannah Gale, and when she tweeted that they had gone into the sale (£9 – bargain!) I felt it was meant to be. These have a leather sole and the straps are lovely and soft.

Next, a pair of sliders from Matalan. I am obsessed with sporty sliders (currently trying to decide between some Adidas or Nike ones on ASOS) but I wanted a slightly smarter pair to wear. These black patent crocodile print ones with a chunky platform are perfect and so comfortable.

About a year ago I bought a pair of snake-print crossover sandals from Primark and I have worn them to death. I have said to Ian I wish I had bought multiple pairs so when I saw an exact copy on the La Redoute website, I had to have them. These are undoubtedly better quality than my Primark offerings and I know I will get a lot of wear out of them.

This summer, I went to a wedding and suffered the unfortunate incident that other women will understand…the sinking heels! After awkwardly standing and walking on grass, trying not to let my pretty heels sink into the lawn, I swore I would find a pair of shoes I could wear to summer weddings and parties that wouldn’t do this. A pair of wedges was the obvious choice and these tan suede ones from La Redoute are perfect. The straw, espadrille-style base means they aren’t too dressy and the colour means they will go with most things.

This next pair were a Primark steal and I love them! They are a soft black suede covered in these gold studs with an ankle tie. I like how these look on and they are really comfy too.

Finally, I know Birkenstocks can invoke a love/ hate reaction but I live in mine over the summer. I picked up these snakeskin-print ones from Primark and they have the softest suede sole which makes it feel like you are putting on a pair of slippers. They do have a funny grip on them though – I almost went flying when I walked across the tiles in our conservatory so just a word of warning!

So, 6 pairs of summery sandals which should see me through until Autumn rolls in.
