Beauty Review – Soap and Glory’s ‘The Whole Glam Lot’

I have been lucky enough to receive the annual Christmas set from Soap and Glory for the past few years and love working my way through the products. This year my mother-in-law treated me to the set which came in a useful little tin suitcase – so handy for storage.

I love the retro packaging of this brand but the products themselves are great and I like the way Soap and Glory mix up the contents every year yet keep a few old favourites in there too. Here was my complete set of items:

Hand Food

This hand cream is excellent and I am just finishing up a previous tube so this was great timing. I like to apply a generous layer of this before bed to keep my hands soft and it smells lovely too. As an aside, the foot cream is excellent as well.

The Scrub of Your Life

I find this quite a unique body scrub as it is thick and foaming as well as exfoliating meaning it is gentle enough for daily (or every other day) use.

The Righteous Butter

A big tub of intensively moisturising body cream, this smells lovely as well as being really hydrating. I get through these tubs quite quickly and this one is great as it absorbs quickly too.

Vitamin C Facial Wash

I haven’t tried this one before and the packaging claims that it does an awful lot! Reading between the lines, this seems to be an exfoliating face wash and from the reviews, looks to be quite refreshing to use.

Sugar Crush

Ahhhh this is an old favourite and smells so summery! Packed with sugar and limes, this is a good, old-fashioned body scrub that leaves your skin smooth and tingly and I find a tub of this lasts me ages.

Smoothie Star Body Milk

Another one I haven’t tried yet apart from a quick sniff and I can confirm it smells like sweet porridge! This appears to be a much lighter body lotion than the body butter so I might save it for the summer when my skin isn’t so dry. I like the pump bottle this comes in too.

Speed Plump Super Moisture Day Cream

I love trying new face creams and this looks fab. I have tried it once and it is a light formula that absorbs quickly and leaves a silky finish, perfect for applying make-up on top of. I didn’t find it plumped my skin, as it claims, but I haven’t given it a proper trial yet. I love the fact there is some skincare as well as bath and body products in this set.

Hand Maid Antibacterial Gel

I didn’t realise Soap and Glory did these sort of products but I like to have a hand gel on me at all times and this one smells nice and fruity.

Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Gloss in Rose & Shine

I have tried this plumping lip gloss before and quite like it. It tingles upon application and, I’m not sure if it is a placebo effect, but I always think my lips look ‘fuller’. This is a pretty nude shade although does feel a little sticky to wear.

Thick and Fast Mascara in ‘Film Noir’

Finally, a new mascara to try out. This claims to ‘lengthen and volumise’ with intense staying-power. Although I have my favourites, I’m not hugely fussy when it comes to mascaras and I will definitely use this one.

I think this year’s Soap and Glory box has a great variety and is always great value for money. I love the fact there are smellies, skincare and make-up included from different ranges and it really will keep me going for a while!

Sunday Summary #51

It has been a pretty quiet week for me but I am in full Christmas mode now and am counting down until the end of term (5 more get-ups!)

We watched Home Alone 2 through the week which is making me want to visit New York in December next year to see all the beautiful window displays. We have also been watching Billions this week – such good dialogue and actors in it.

I also spent yesterday putting up the final Christmas decorations so the house is looking so festive and cosy.

I made mince-pie pastries which I will try and write the (very simple!) recipe for this week.

We went out for a roast dinner today at a nearby pub for my brother’s girlfriend’s birthday. I had rare roast beef which was delicious!

I bought a little blast from the past this week – Fry’s Turkish Delight…as good as I remembered.

I have tried to avoid buying anything in the run-up to Christmas but I am obsessing with pleated midi skirts at the moment, especially slightly metallic ones.

I have been enjoying my L’Occitane en Provence advent calendar each morning.

With the constant cold weather and central heating, I have pulled out the big guns with a new body butter from The Body Shop. This is the green olive scent and is so rich and moisturising.

Finally, a duo from Eyeko that I have been loving. The FAT liquid eyeliner is a great product, and you can create either a thick or thin line with the felt tip-style applicator.

The Black Magic mascara is also really good. It has a curved brush which helps to curl my eyelashes slightly.

Latest Purchases #101 – US Drugstore Haul

The pound-dollar exchange rate was pretty poor when we were in Boston (thanks Brexit!) so we didn’t do a whole lot of shopping. I tried to only buy things that we couldn’t get in the UK and one afternoon, I had a browse around our local CVS store and came away with this little pile of goodies.

First up, the base products. I am always on the hunt for a new foundation and I got these two from the Maybelline ‘Fit Me’ range. I went for the Dewy and Smooth and the Matte and Poreless foundations which cater for dry to oily skin. I have tried both and like them but I don’t like the fact that you have to pour the product out – I would much prefer a pump.

I also bought this BB Cream from ELF. I liked the fact this had SPF 20 in it and will be great for those days where you just want to wear a light base. This also has a pump in the lid!

Another ELF face product was this Illuminating Face Primer. This is very golden and definitely needs a light touch! You could actually use this as a highlighter on the cheekbones or, as it recommends, mix a little into your foundation for a bit of extra glow.

Onto lip products now and with the colder weather, mine are already suffering! I really like the EOS lip balms and I bought the Blackberry Nectar flavour.

I also picked up a bumper pack of Carmex lip balms in Cherry and Winter Mint flavours which should keep my chapped lips at bay.

I bought a new Maybelline mascara. I have used their Great Lash version for years but haven’t seen the Blackest Black colour before.

I also got an ELF mascara with a regular and waterproof end.

I broke my spending ban on nail varnish with a new bottle from Essie. Metallic nails seem to be having a moment and I love this shade, Good as Gold…expect a post on Monday!

I am a fan of the Milani blushers and picked up another one in the colour Berry Amore. This is a dusky pink shade baked with swirls of gold.

Also from Milani is this Color Statement Lipstick in Teddy Bare. I don’t have a colour like this dark nude and I think it is quite seasonal. I have tried it a few times and it is creamy, well-pigmented and smells like watermelon.

From ELF, I bought a Matte Lip Colour in Tea Rose. It isn’t a drying matte formula and I like the long, thin ‘pen’ it comes in.

I think I was having a bit of a moment by the ELF stand as I also got an eyebrow kit. This is a gel and powder duo which I haven’t used before but will enjoy experimenting with!

Finally, I bought a Maybelline Color Tattoo cream eye shadow in Bad to the Bronze. This is quite a warm, taupe bronze as opposed to an orange-toned one and the pigmentation and staying power is excellent. I wear these eye shadows on their own or as a base colour and they don’t crease like many other cream products.

I was really happy unpacking this selection of items and now comes the fun bit of testing them all out!

Sunday Summary #47

We started the week with a Sunday-night gig to watch Tom Odell. Ian is more into him than I am but I have to say he was great live.

The heating is permanently on at the moment as it has gone so chilly. It does provide some beautiful sunrises though…

We were glued to the new series of Planet Earth – those snakes!!!

The results of the US election came in, plunging most of us into a deep despair and making us wonder what is wrong with the world. I took a little break from social media as I just couldn’t stand the constant reminders.

My bedroom furniture has finally started to arrive and Ian put together our bedside tables this weekend. Pale grey, mid-century style with gorgeous little copper legs, I can’t wait for the rest to be delivered!

Ian’s parents came to stay for a few days bringing George, their Jack Russell, with them. We went to the village pub quiz last night which was really fun although difficult!

The cold weather means there is only one thing I want for breakfast at the moment – porridge! I do love the sickly-sweet golden syrup flavour but know I should have something a little healthier.

I suffered a ‘snackcident’ this week – when you only mean to have a small snack but end up eating an entire bag of sweet and salty popcorn!

Nothing ground-breaking to report this week but I do have two essentials..thick black tights and my fur-lined slippers!

I unpacked a few things I bought in CVS in America and have been trying them out this week. Two current favourites include this Maybelline mascara in Blackest Black and this new bottle of metallic gold Essie nail varnish.

Beauty Review – May Birchbox

Yeah, slightly late with this one but hey!

May’s Birchbox was named ‘For the Dreamers’ and was all about your dream be it a holiday or the perfect nude lip colour.

You may notice the box is silver coated. It actually has that scratchcard stuff on it, allowing you to scratch the surface away to see if you’ve won a holiday. I’m sorry Birchbox but this is a horrible idea! I spend way too much time on my nails to scratch that stuff off and who wants bits of silver all over the floor?!

Anyway, awful box aside, inside was the usual assortment of beauty treats.

First up, Spectrum Collections Unicorn Tears Wonder Sponge…yeah, it’s a Beauty Blender! I really like Spectrum brushes and this make-up sponge is nice too. It’s a little tougher and more rigid than a Beauty Blender but I am a fan of applying my foundation with these sponges so this is a good back-up for when my current one has had it. I also like the little plastic pouch it comes in.

Next, a tube of PK Prep Polishing Balm by Philip Kingsley. I LOVE their Elasticizer so am keen to try this hair product designed to smooth frizz. It doesn’t seem formulated for curly hair which is a bit annoying but I do wear my hair straight sometimes so will give this a go.

I also received a pot of Puriskin’s Resurfacing Cream. It sounds quite a harsh product but is actually a very thick and nourishing moisturiser.

In my opinion you can’t go wrong with adding a black mascara to a beauty box and this tube from Eyeko looks interesting. Firstly it isn’t in traditional packaging and the wand is heavily curved. This is meant to give you perfectly curled lashes and I have to say it is quite effective. I’ve just had my lashes lifted though so any mascara gives this effect but I would repurchase this.

Next, some Ole Henriksen face wipes. I know some beauty bloggers think these are the devil’s work but on occasion, we all reach for a face wipe. For me, it’s either when I’m travelling or I’ve had a bit too much to drink and the thought of double cleansing seems too much! I’ve heard good things about this brand so will pop these in my make-up bag.

The final item should have been a Givenchy perfume sample but sadly mine was missing in the box! However, I have found Birchbox to have great customer service so I’m awaiting my replacement.

Overall, a pretty average box this month with my favourite item definitely being the mascara.

Sunday Summary #22

This week seems to have flown by!

My Mum was in New York this week (very jealous!) so my Dad came to stay for a couple of days. Liverpool played in (and lost) the Europa Cup Final this week and we had various friends and family over so my Dad was on cooking duty. He spent all day in the kitchen and produced the most amazing spread which included salt and pepper squid, buttermilk fried chicken, duck in plum sauce, a huge bowl of egg fried rice and curry beef…it’s great having a chef in the family!

I’ve also been going on morning runs. Just a mile or so but I feel amazing afterwards and the views aren’t bad either.

Last night, Ian and I headed out to watch the All Star Stand-Up Tour with Jarred Christmas, Gary Delaney, Pete Firman and Sean Hughes. All four comedians were very different so it was cool to watch a variety of comedic styles.

On TV, we finally finished House of Cards (it was great!) so are about to start Scandal soon. Game of Thrones has kept us gripped and one of my favourite American comedies, Veep, has started again.

I’m a few chapters in to ‘Only We Know’ and enjoying it so far – I’m planning on ploughing through a few more chapters on the plane next week, probably with a holiday G&T!

Finally, I made the fatal mistake of looking at the BA flight sale and somehow ended up booking a week in Boston in October! I have always wanted to visit the East coast in Autumn to see the beautiful colours of the trees and Boston seems a really cool city. So…we are off to Berlin next week, a mini-Scandinavian cruise in the summer and Boston a few months later – exciting times!

My favourite meal this week has to be my Dad’s football feast.

Ian also mastered making perfect margaritas so we’ve had a fair few of those, purely for recipe testing purposes of course.

I feel like I haven’t cooked anything from scratch for ages so spent a few hours in the kitchen this afternoon making an enormous pot of chili con carne which we will have with tortillas, rice and jacket potatoes for the next few nights, loaded with sour cream and guacamole of course!

Ian was at work yesterday so I treated myself to a mid-afternoon pamper session and gave myself a manicure and pedicure. On my feet, I used Essie’s Meet Me At Sunset, a bright orange-red, and on my fingernails I had a play around with some purple foil tips.

I’ve also been testing out the products from the latest Birchbox – there’s a mascara in there I really like.

I’ve decided to give off-the-shoulder tops a go. I’ve always found it hard to find a good strapless bra for a bigger chest so avoided this style. However, I’ve bought a black dress from ASOS (which I was hoping to have a picture of but Ian left the delivery at work!) and this striped top from Primark to try out.

Beauty Review – Lash Lift

I’m not usually a jealous person but one thing my brother has that I don’t really irks me…good eyelashes! His are thick, long and beautifully curled whereas mine are short, straight, quite sparse and blonde meaning they are practically invisible without mascara.

Of course, there are certain things you can do to overcome this. I am always trying new mascaras and tend to go for anything that offers volume or a curl and I do have eyelash curlers but find them a bit of a pain to use on daily basis. I’ve also looked into lash extensions in the past but have always been put off by the idea of having to be careful with the cleansers and mascaras I can use plus they can look a bit patchy if you don’t get them ‘topped up’.

I have a really good local beautician and have been treating myself to a monthly facial or massage with her and after discussing my eyelash woes with her, she recommended an eyelash tint and lift. I always have an eyelash tint before holiday anyway so an extra eyelash treatment seemed a good idea.

After an hour or so of having various different potions on my lashes, I couldn’t believe the difference – I hope my photos do this justice!

My lash tint lasted about a month but the lash lift lasted a little longer – maybe 6 weeks or so. It made any mascara I wore look amazing and really opened up my eyes. I also felt more confident going make-up free and just loved this treatment.

I’ve already booked in to have this done again and would highly recommend it to any other ladies who aren’t blessed with naturally amazing lashes!

Latest Purchases #94 – A Kiko Haul

Hello half-term! I started mine with a lovely long lie-in, a quick gym trip (my first session in about three weeks…very sweaty!) and now I am just pottering about, researching where in Havana does the best mojito and getting ready to head out to Bristol later for burgers and a catch-up with friends.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in Bath to get my hair and brows done and I popped into Kiko. They had an amazing deal on where you could buy 5 items for £10(!) so I took full advantage of it. There were so many amazing new releases I could have spent a lot more but I stuck to these 5 items on this visit.

First of all, I have to say I really like the sleek black packaging and I think it looks very high-end.

I picked up one of the Universal Fit Hydrating Foundations. I think I rushed my colour choice and picked up a shade that is slightly too dark for me at the moment but I’m hoping I’ll return from my holiday with a slight tan and the foundation should be fine then. Formula-wise, this is a really nice product with a light to medium coverage and for me, a nice everyday option.

I also picked up this rather jazzy mascara in a deep turquoise (shade 03 from their Super Colour range). I usually stick to black but I absolutely love this shade. I’m not sure whether it’s because of my colouring but it makes my eyes look so blue and is a good formula too. It’s quite a dry mascara which makes me think it won’t last too long but definitely something different when you fancy switching things up a bit.

Three lip items next, all quite different. Annoyingly, their make-up items don’t have names, just numbers to identify the colours – my one grumble with this brand.

I bought this Smooth Temptation lipstick in 04, a pigmented, creamy formula in a stick. It feels very moisturising on your lips and the stick means application is easy. I would describe this colour as a dusky rose-pink with a slight brown leaning and although it looks quite shimmery on my hand, this doesn’t translate to the lip.

From their Smart Lipstick range, I got the shade 924, a brown-leaning pinky nude. Again, this formula feels very creamy to apply but isn’t the most pigmented or long-wearing. However, I like the colour so don’t mind having to reapply this when wearing it.

Finally, a Smart Lip Pencil in the shade 707. This is a bright pinky-red colour and can be worn as a lip liner or to fill in the lips completely. Considering it is from the same Smart range of the lipstick, this stuff doesn’t budge! It has excellent staying-power and is very pigmented.

Five make-up items for £10 seems so reasonable and I am slowly trying more and more from Kiko and really liking their make-up. I am keen to try their skincare items next!

Sunday Summary #12

Hello and Happy Sunday! I’m finally over this horrible cough/ cold/ flu-thing I’ve had and it seems as though spring may be making an appearance too. I only have four days of work left and a holiday in the Caribbean to look forward to so life is good!

This weekend, Ian and I stayed up North and went to a family party, dancing until the early hours. We staved off the beginnings of hangover with cooked breakfasts, tea and smoothies and made it back home in good time.

This week, we finished watching Happy Valley which I thought was excellent. I’m still reading The Memory of Love and trying to finish it by the end of the week as I plan on only taking my Kindle on holiday with me. I have a few titles I want to download but I also have some excellent books on there that I quite fancy re-reading too.

I have kept up my no-chocolate for Lent and am quite literally counting down the days until I can crack open a packet (or 5) of Mini Eggs.

We treated ourselves to another mid-week Indian takeaway to enjoy with the football.

I also did a spot of healthy baking, making these sugar free bananabread/flapjack hybrids!

After a mini splurge in Kiko last weekend (a proper review is coming this week) I have been testing out my new purchases. My two favourites so far include this gorgeous turquoise mascara and this nude lipstick.

I’ve worn a sleeping mask to bed most night this week and am really feeling the benefits – full review of the Sephora masks here.

In preparation for our holiday, I have been perusing the bikinis, kaftans and straw hats on ASOS. I’m so used to going away in the summer that it feels very strange to be looking at these items in March! x

Beauty Review – My Last Three Birchboxes

Due to end-of-year laziness on my part, I never managed to share my November and December Birchboxes but, seeing as I did take some photos, I thought I’d do a 3-in-1 post so grab a cuppa and prepare for some beauty goodies!

Arriving with the most cringe-worthy theme of ‘#squadgoals’, November’s Birchbox was a collaboration with Skinnydip, known for lovely mobile phone covers. Inside the rather beautiful box were these goodies:

  • Acquaconfort Cream from Delarom – a rejuvenating moisturising cream for the face

  • Featherlash Mascara from So Susan – a great black mascara promising thicker, fuller lashes

  • La Crème de Teint from Absolution – a lovely tinted moisturiser

  • A body lotion from Beauty Protector – I’ve mentioned before that I don’t really get that excited by body creams in Birchbox but this smells pleasant enough

  • A Lord and Berry neutral lip liner in the shade Silhouette – I am intrigued by this translucent lip pencil that is meant to be used to line the outside of your lips to prevent lipstick bleeding

  • Finally, my favourite item…a pack of nail wraps from Thumbs Up. I received the Rosa design and love this graphic floral print that can be worn alone or over nail varnish.

Overall, a decent box – I love the nail wraps and thought the Lord and Berry item was very original.

I was expecting something glitzy for the Christmas box and Birchbox didn’t disappoint! This month’s box arrived in a cute clutch bag that would be great for a night out. Inside there was:

  • A foaming shower gel from Rituals in the scent T’ai Chi – I already own a rose-scented version of this and love it. It is so luxurious to use and this also smells amazing.

  • A face mask from Roloxin – I hadn’t heard of this brand but do enjoy a good face mask

  • A firming moisturiser from Monu – this contains lavender which is sadly a smell I just can’t stand…one for my Mum I think!

  • A mini Ciaté nail varnish in the shade Mistress – I really didn’t need another one of these polishes but this is a stunning bright red shade.

  • A full-sized Lord and Berry crayon lipstick in the shade Fire – a gorgeous orange-red lip pencil that feels very moisturising on the lips with a slight glossy finish. This alone is worth £10, making this box such good value.

  • Finally, a fabulously-packaged kit from Benefit designed for pre and post partying. This little set contains mini versions of They’re Real eye-liner and Puff Off eye gel. I haven’t tried either yet but the packaging alone won me over!

I think this was a great box and definitely felt very Christmassy!

January’s box arrived earlier this week, full of New Year enthusiasm with a Pinterest collaboration.

  • The first item I picked up was this set of 5 postcards, illustrated by Victoria Semjonova – I especially love the nail varnish one!
  • Cowshed body lotion – this is a really decent sized sample and I love Cowshed products. This is rose-scented so it’s right up my street.

  • Cleansing Water from Absolution – I think this is akin to a micellar water but smells amazing. I look forward to trying this to take off my eye make-up.

  • Benefit Tinted Primer – a primer for your mascara? I can’t say this is something I feel I am in great need of but am always open to trying new products.
  • Birchbox compact mirror – nothing special but always handy.

  • A ‘Moisturising and Repairing’ shampoo and conditioner set from Parlor – I really like that Birchbox have sent both the shampoo and conditioner to try so you can really get a feel for the products together. I’m looking forward to using these peach-scented items.
  • A ‘Waterliner’ from Jelly Pong Pong – a brightening eyeliner to be used along the waterline to give you a wide-eyed, more awake look. This is very creamy and can also be blended and used as a highlighter.

Overall, a fab start to the year from Birchbox with a good mix of brands…and well done if you made it to the end of this product-heavy post! x
