Five Friday Favourites #16

Broadchurch

WOW! After not massively enjoying series 2, I was optimistic about this third series. Ian and I didn’t watch each week but instead save them up and had a big binge over the Easter weekend and it was great. I also really want to visit West Bay where it was filmed.

Bingo

Our local pub currently has a temporary manager who is really trying to engage the villagers. There was a bingo night this week which isn’t my usual thing but we wanted to support the pub. We ended up really enjoying it and I even won one round!

Candle

I love Lily Flame candles and I started burning this Rose Petals one this week. I think the little tins look great and the scent really does fill the room.

Spring Walks

IMG_0787

I met up with some friends this week for a long walk and lunch in the sunshine. We saw ducklings and baby moorhens as we wandered along in the sunshine and I had a fab veggie breakfast when we reached the café for lunch!

Face Masks

I have been using two different masks this week and like them both for different reasons. Firstly, is the Balance Me Radiance Face Mask which is exfoliating yet hydrating.

IMG_0769

I also repurchased the Sephora Lotus Sleeping Mask. This gel mask is soothing and moisturising and I love the fact that it is working its magic overnight while I sleep.

Tenerife

I love looking back at my travel posts and remembering little details I may have forgotten. For this reason, I wanted to write a short post on our 5 nights in Tenerife. It wasn’t the most jam-packed all-action holiday but we literally googled ‘hottest place in Europe in April’ and the Canary Islands kept coming up so we booked it a few weeks ago and looked forward to sun, good food and a chance to relax.

IMG_0709

We stayed in a little town called Puerto de la Cruz. I liked the fact that our hotel was right on the beach and that we could wander along the seafront at night watching the sunset and the waves. We managed to see the Semana Santa parade one evening too and indulged in a fish pedicure (Ian’s idea of hell!)

We did paddle on the black sands one afternoon but the current was so strong we didn’t wade in too far!

Our hotel itself was lovely. I was surprised at how lush the north of Tenerife was and we had an abundance of palm trees, plants and cacti in the grounds of the hotel – and loads of lizards running around too.

The food was wonderful – I got a bit obsessed with churros and Nutella for breakfast everyday, paella with clams for lunch then mojo sauce which is a garlicky, herby salsa that I liberally spooned over everything! We also had a Spanish cheeseboard every night as I am just not a fan of Spanish desserts.

One evening, we ate in the hotel’s a la carte restaurant where we enjoyed a great meal including a delicious duck dish.

One of my favourite places to hang out was our balcony. We had the sun on it in the late afternoon so we would sit out with a beer before dinner then again before we went to bed with candle lit, planning future holidays and putting the world to rights.

I still have a week off work so plan on using that time to read and get all those little jobs done that I keep putting off!

Happy Easter x

Latest Purchases #111 – A Primark Haul

What a beaut of a weekend! The sun was out and the clocks changed which means lighter mornings and evenings which are guaranteed to improve my mood.

Last weekend, I popped into Primark to hunt out the silver Gucci-inspired loafers I have seen everywhere and of course, picked up a few more items…

Here are the silver shoes I wanted. I am still wearing them in but think they will be perfect for Spring.

I love Primark’s loungewear and pyjamas. I find they are made of super-soft cotton which hang beautifully and are really loose and comfortable. I picked up a couple of cosy tops to wear in the evenings or as pyjamas.

On the pyjama theme, I bought this silky black pair of pjs which feel quite luxurious on.

IMG_0491

This top was probably my favourite purchase of the lot and one that I think encapsulates a lot of this season’s trends in the embroidery and the flared sleeves. I ended up getting this a couple of sizes bigger as I wanted quite a loose, almost floaty fit.

I really liked the colours in this knitted jumper and I think it looks more expensive than it was. Again, I sized up as a I wanted a baggy, over-sized fit and this looks great with jeans.

IMG_0496

I am after some green leaf prints for our bedroom and this cacti one is a good start. I may collate a gallery wall of sorts and I like the colours and gold detail on this print.

IMG_0495

I am slowly replacing all of my old mismatched hangers with these slim, copper ones so I picked up another 4 packs of these. It’s amazing how much more I can fit in my wardbrobe and they look really nice too.

IMG_0492

Whilst in the home section, I picked up a candle and reed diffuser. They definitely don’t have the strongest scent but do offer a subtle fragrance to a room.

Finally, a little at-the-till purchase of these coconut chips. I am trying to snack healthier at the moment and not reach for the biscuits and these coconut chips are really tasty.

Latest Purchases #107 – A Space NK Haul

Well, Trump was sworn in yesterday thus beginning one of the strangest eras in American politics. I wasn’t able to attend one of the #WomenMarch protests today but it was incredible to see so many people turning up to make their voices heard…with a fab selection of placards too!

img_0036

Anyway, onto slightly happier things: a little box of goodies that arrived from Space NK. Most of these items were in the sale, some of which I needed, others were a treat.

img_0037

First up, Space NK’s own brand Daily Fix Body Lotion. I like this range and use the bath soak when I need to really relax. This is very simple packaging-wise and I think the product is the same – not overly-fragranced, fresh and fast absorbing. My skin is quite sensitive at the moment so this simple body lotion is ideal for me and was actually reduced to just £1.50 for this large tube.

Next, I bought two products from luxe nail brand Rococo. Firstly, in the most beautiful packaging, was the Ultimate Nail Basecoat (£12 reduced to £3). This is meant to have dual qualities; to strengthen your nails and also to make your nail varnish look brighter and last longer. You can use this alone and keep layering on the product or as a traditional basecoat.

Also from Rococo is their Nail Varnish Remover which I stocked up on (£10 to £1.50)! This is acetone-free, which is meant to be slightly kinder on the nail, and I love the packaging. The actual bottle is great too – you simply press a cotton pad on the top of the dispenser and the perfect amount of product is released.

A bit of luxury next in the form of my first ever Diptyque candle. I have wanted to try one of these candles for years but could never quite bring myself to spend so much on a candle. However, when I spotted this one at half price (£28 down to £14) I decided to treat myself. Firstly, the packaging – in collaboration with artist Julien Colombier – is beautiful and I will definitely be keeping the glass after the candle has finished. The scent, Oliban, is not my usual choice but is a deep, sexy, spicy, oriental one. This was part of their Christmas range but is not noticeably festive-scented.

img_0092

One thing I love about ordering from Space NK is the samples! I chose a couple of acid peels and a REN BB cream to try which I just think are lovely little extras.

I feel I was quite restrained in this recent haul – there was a Laura Mercier palette I was hovering over for quite a while but I got more than enough lovely things for Christmas that I want to work my way through before buying anything else.

Latest Purchases #103 – More Candles!

I am really into candles at the moment. I bought a few from Bath and Body Works on our trip to Boston and I love how cosy the living room looks with just the Christmas tree lights and a flickering candle. The scent it adds is lovely too and I do like to match my candles to the season so here are a few autumnal and festive ones I have been burning recently.

The most Christmassy one is this Peppermint Bark scented candle from TK Maxx. I got this as a present and think it is just beautiful. From the little gingerbread men on the box to the red, frosted glass jar, this is lovely. There is a strong candycane peppermint scent, but it is mixed with a creamy white chocolate note which stops it from being overly sweet. This was a nice alternative to the usual Christmas candles and quite refreshing.

Next, two large two-wick candles from B&M. I saw these popping up on various blogs recently with comparisons being made to Yankee and Bath and Body Works candles. There is no doubting the influence these have taken from the two bigger brands and I have to say they are great value for £2.99 each. They look great and even have the pretty embossed lids too.

Apple Orchard is a warm, cinnamon scent which reminds me of apple pie and the fruity scent does come through when it is burned.

I also picked up Radiant Red Maple which has quite a similar scent. I would say this is less fruity and more spicy, kind of like a chai latte – my all-time favourite drink. This has a strong cinnamon and nutmeg smell with an additional sweet creaminess.

It goes without saying that these aren’t quite as good quality as the Bath and Body Works ones. Only having two wicks means they don’t burn quite as evenly and the scent isn’t quite as powerful either. However, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at these and will definitely repurchase again.

From Dunelm, I bought a small Mulled Wine candle. This deep red candle smells of citrus, spices and berries and reminds me of warm cups of wine being sipped at Christmas markets. Being quite small, this doesn’t have the strongest scent but is a pleasant enough candle to burn.

Finally, not strictly a candle but I have been loving this oil burner. I bought it for Ian (he’s a fellow candle lover!) and it is a beautiful Himalayan pink salt candle. It gives off a lovely, warm glow and the little glass tray on top allows you to burn wax melts or use essential oils. I have been using this Frosted Cranberry fragrance oil from The Body Shop and it is a really nice sweet, berry scent which fills the room.

Latest Purchases #102 – A Bath and Body Works Haul

When we were in Boston in October, the exchange rate was rubbish so shopping wasn’t really high on our to-do list. However, I did know that I would want to pay a visit to Bath and Body Works for a few seasonal treats! The lady in the shop told me Brits go mad for their products but I love their candles and hand gels and find the scents so different and original from anywhere else.

Candles first…

I bought two of the large three-wick candles in Caramel Pumpkin Swirl and Chocolate Pistachio.

The first is a lovely autumnal scent with notes of pumpkin, caramel, cinnamon and vanilla. I have been burning this for about a week and I’m not exaggerating when I say the scent has filled the house! It may be slightly too sickly for some but I find it warming and perfect for this time of year.

img_8949

The other is a pretty green colour scented with pistachio and chocolate truffle. I’m saving this one for Christmas, possibly to burn in the kitchen. Both of these candles have gorgeous copper embossed lids too.

I also got a smaller candle in Pumpkin Pecan Waffles. This has notes of maple syrup, waffles and pumpkin spice. It also has beautiful artwork on the front.

img_8869

As well as the candles, I picked up a few seasonal items in the form of this Cinnamon Pumpkin handwash, this ‘Vampire Blood’ plum anti-bacterial hand gel and my favourite item, this Pumpkin Apple Cider shower gel which contains shea butter for a really rich lather.

Sunday Summary #50

Life

It has been a very chilled weekend which is exactly what I wanted before the crazy run-up to Christmas.

I spent most of today finishing off my Christmas shopping and I am almost done! We keep saying we are going to have a low-key one this year but it is so easy to get carried away when you spot something you know somebody will love.

We watched the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special this week – I miss that series! I plan on watching my favourite Christmas films over the next few weeks now…Home Alone, Love Actually, Elf – all the classics.

I have been making things as cosy as possible in the evenings this week. I love my mermaid blanket and candles add a warm soft light to the room. We’ve just finished burning this Jasmine and Bamboo candle and have moved onto this Caramel and Pumpkin Swirl one…my living room smells divine!

Food

My favourite Christmas cocktail made an appearance this week…the snowball. Ridiculously retro, but delicious, this is a really festive drink that tastes like sherbet!

img_8947

Ian and I went for lunch at Comptoir Libanais yesterday and I am so glad we now have a branch in Bath. We had a big sharing platter full of dips and salads followed by baklava and rose mint tea…absolutely divine!

We also enjoyed croissants and flat whites at Bertinet Bakery – my absolute favourite place to buy pastries in Bath.

img_8935

Fashion

I have been on the search for a new coat for a while now and had my heart set on a camel or blush pink pea coat but haven’t been able to find one that is quite right. I was planning on waiting for the sales but then I saw this bad boy and I couldn’t resist it!

img_8945

I love leopard print and I think that as long as the rest of the outfit is fairly neutral, a statement coat looks fab. This coat was a Primark bargain and is so soft and cosy.

Beauty

I have been enjoying this shower gel from Bath and Body Works. It smells divine and actually feels very moisturising and luxurious.

img_8866

My L’Occitance calendar is such a lovely treat every day – I think I will do a little review when I have opened them all.

img_8923

My lips have been so dry and chapped since I was poorly last month and I have been trying everything to cure them. So far, this Dr Lipp nipple balm has proved to be the most effective.

img_8955

Finally, I had a cut and colour this week so I am ready for the party season. I went for lots of white, cool-toned blondes again and plan to keep them this way with purple shampoo.
