Five Friday Favourites #17

Blood Brothers

It feels like ages ago that I booked these tickets for my parents’ Christmas present but the weekend finally rolled around to go and see this show in Bristol. It is my favourite musical and we all really enjoyed it. We had a fab day in the sunshine walking along the Harbourside, enjoying cocktails and eating pizza.

The Longs Arms

Another mention for mine and Ian’s favourite pub! We went up here for dinner last night as, and usual, it was stunning. We shared starters of lobster and a goats meat scotch egg then I had lemon sole while Ian had the lamb. I always look forward to pudding and seeing what crazy flavour of ice-cream is on the menu and this time we sampled root beer, cream soda, Nutella, peanut butter and jam and – my new favourite – Jaffa Cake.

New Earrings

I rediscovered these earrings that my best friend Lu bought me for my birthday. They are lovely silver swallows and I have been wearing them all week.

Becca Highlighter

This week, I have been really enjoying wearing the Shimmering Skin Perfector by Becca in the shade Moonstone as recommended by The Anna Edit. I like how natural this looks and I really do think it suits paler complexions.

I have been after a pair of pool sliders since last summer. I saw these in Primark and I thought they looked really fun and they are actually really comfortable. It’s one of the first times that I have stopped to wonder whether I am too ‘old’ for an item of clothing but then realised I didn’t really care and headed to the tills!

Five Friday Favourites #8

A slightly belated Friday Favourites this week but I have been away this weekend and wanted to switch off and relax a bit, so better late than never!

Weezer’s White Album

I used to absolutely LOVE this band (the Green Album is one of my all-time favourites) but I didn’t know what to expect when I listened to their new album. Luckily, it didn’t disappoint and I have been playing it non-stop for the past week. My favourite tracks are ‘California Kids’ and ‘Jacked Up’.

A New Lasagne Recipe

I get really excited when I discover a new twist on a classic recipe and I followed Gino D’Acampo’s lasagne recipe which adds homemade pesto to the white sauce, giving it a new flavour that really works well.

Ricky Gervais

I went to see Ricky Gervais’ new stand-up show ‘Humanity’ this week. He actually had a bit of a funny turn and had to leave the stage for a bit and we weren’t sure whether it was all part of the act or serious! As well as the live show, we had amazing pizzas beforehand at Beerd – the chestnut mushroom, truffle and parmesan one was divine!

The OA

We finished watching this Netflix series this week and whilst it wasn’t one of my all-time favourites, it was entertaining and a bit different…if a little weird.

Banana Bread

It feels like I haven’t baked anything for ages so I was really excited to try a slice of this. I made banana bread with Mini Eggs and hazelnuts and it turned out to be so delicious!

Bristol Fashion Week Freebies

I know Monday is usually dedicated to a nails post but mine are in such a sorry state at the moment. I broke two of my nails during my 5K run a few weeks ago and they are only just starting to properly grow again.

In the meantime, I thought I would share the goodie bag I got at Bristol Fashion Week. I have to say that the fashion show was such good value for money. It was £9 and we got drinks and nibbles for the show, an excellent 45 minute catwalk presentation with several different looks and this goodie bag afterwards.

The bag itself is a handy tote that I will definitely use for my weekly shop.

Inside there was:

A Go Coco drink – I actually nabbed my Mum’s too as she doesn’t like Coconut water. I got a small banana shake drink and a big carton of plain coconut water.

A Lancome skincare duo consisting of a mini serum and moisturiser

A Specsavers glasses case and pen

A copy of John Lewis’style magazine

A sachet of toothpaste (a horrible way of packaging…what’s wrong with a tube?!)

A full-sized bottle of Ladival sun-tan lotion (a shame it’s such a low factor)

A mini packet of Jelly Belly beans

A Vichy foundation sample (which sadly looks a bit dark for me)

A mini Prada Candy fragrance

A La Roche-Posay eye cream

A Crunchie biscuit

I think my favourites are the edible items and the Lancome beauty bits…a nice little bag of swag!

Restaurant Review – Beerd at Colston Hall, Bristol

Last week, Ian and I went to watch Romesh Ranganathan’s stand-up show at Colston Hall in Bristol. We both went straight from work and due to Friday night traffic, didn’t leave ourselves long to grab a bite to eat before the gig. Luckily, we had a recommendation to try Beerd which is located in the venue and specialises in two of our favourite things – craft beer and pizza.

It is quite a small space but we managed to find a table to peruse the beer menu. There is an impressive selection here, all available in half, two-third and pint measures. I had a can of Session IPA from Fourpure Brewing Company which was a lovely, hoppy beer.

Our food arrived in about 20 minutes and I was more than ready to tuck in. I ordered from the specials menu and had a calzone filled with ham, mushroom and ricotta. It came with a salad which was both underdressed and full of onion so I left most of it. The calzone however was delicious…like a beautiful, Italian pasty!

We ordered a side of hot wings to share which were very tasty although should have come with a side of blue cheese sauce like they do in America (sidenote: I plan on ordering a portion of hot wings every day we are in the States later this month!)

Ian ordered a really good pizza which came with beef brisket, Bath Gem ale chipotle sauce and pickles. Now, I am a big pickle fan but have never had it on pizza and I have to say it worked really well with the BBQ-style toppings.

I would definitely go back to Beerd next time we go to a comedy or music show in Bristol. The menu is simple but really good, especially if you are a beer or pizza fan.

Sunday Summary #41

It has been the perfect, crisp autumnal day today and I am praying this weather holds out for the rest of the week as I’m off on a residential trip with school and I am not a fan of standing about in the rain for hours on end!

This week I have been over to Bristol twice. Once to watch Bristol City with my bestie Lu (we won and we had Cornish pasties and hot chocolate with cream!) and again on Friday to watch Romesh Ranganathan who was brilliant.

I’ve also had a hen do this weekend which involved learning the Thriller dance and dressing up followed by a girlie day with my Mum, shopping, lunching and attending a fashion show…a pretty great weekend!

Before watching Romesh, Ian and I tried out Beerd at the Colston Hall which specialises in craft beer and pizza. I had a lovely calzone and will try to write a proper review soon.

I also made a delicious apple crumble which we even enjoyed for breakfast one morning…pudding for breakfast should be a thing!

I finally got around to reviewing my latest Birchbox this week and have enjoyed playing around with the Model Co highlighting trio.

I’ve also been testing a new cleanser. I picked up this one from Boscia which is an oil that emulsifies on contact with water. It is gentle but effective at removing my eye make-up and I may pick up a full-sized one when we visit the States (and a Sephora!) later this month.

I picked up a new pair of brogues in Matalan last weekend and have been wearing them non-stop. They are quite masculine in design but are comfy, go with everything and I have had lots of compliments on them too.

Finally, I am feeling quite inspired fashion-wise at the moment as I attended the final show of Bristol Fashion Week at Cribbs Causeway this afternoon. Presented by Henry Holland, it showed you really accessible ways to wear the current trends and I *think* I may have found my new winter coat too! FYI, the trends to look out for in Autumn/ Winter include: military, sports luxe, oversized, pastels, gothic, mismatching prints, animal print (especially leopard) and velvet. I really loved this fashion show and we got a great goodie bag too!

Sunday Summary #35

It has been my last full week at home before I go back to work so I have been enjoying some fairly chilled out afternoons, cooking, reading and making the most of my last few lie-ins.

This weekend, despite being rather cold, grey and rainy (autumn anyone?!), has been really fun. Yesterday, I went for lunch then to watch Bristol City play…and sadly lose. Then Ian and I watched The Martian and forced ourselves to stay awake to cheer on Mo Farah – I’m going to miss the Olympics when they finish.

We finished watching the second series of Scandal and it just got so bad we have abandoned it and aren’t going to watch Series 3. A shame, as it started well but just got so far-fetched in the end. We have started watching a British drama called The Five and so far, it is gripping.

Today, we went for burgers then to watch the new David Brent film, Life on the Road. It was hilarious and moving in equal measure – the song lyrics especially make me cringe and laugh.

I am off on holiday next week with Ian and one of our best friends so have been busy researching things to do and see. We are doing a mini-Scandinavian cruise stopping off in Sweden, Estonia, Russia and Finland and I cannot wait!

We had some sad news this week too – our village pub, The Muddy Duck, which we go to on a weekly basis is closing down. We were gutted when we read the notice on the door and Ian was on about moving as we love having a good pub in the village! I’m hoping a buyer is found soon and it doesn’t have to close but I am so sad it is changing hands and have so many good foodie memories there.

Our new bed arrived this week and it’s copper! I think it looks beautiful and I will write up a mini room tour in a few weeks when our new furniture and accessories have arrived…copper and leaf prints will feature heavily.

Finally, I listened to Nadiya Hussain’s Desert Island Discs (last year’s Bake Off winner) and it moved me to tears. I already loved her but hearing her talk about the struggles she faces as a British Muslim and how she deals with it in such a dignified way was very moving.

Is it just me, or do you find a food that you love then eat nothing but that until you are sick of it?! Well, I have discovered this honey flavoured Greek yogurt and have had it with blueberries every morning for the past week and am so obsessed I have 4 more tubs of it in my fridge.

Alongside the yogurt, I have also been having these rose and pineapple flavoured toasted sesame seeds my friend Lucie picked up for me at a food market. These seeds are delicious and really go with my new favourite breakfast.

I had a big clear out of my nail varnish collection this week and blogged about it. I honestly thought most people had this many bottles too but a few comments on social media have alerted me I have a bit of a problem!

I’m not usually that fussy with shower gels – I tend to pick something that smells nice but this one from Dove is lovely to use. It is so luxurious and creamy and my skin feels really soft and moisturised after using it.

I had managed to rack up a fair few Birchbox point (little tip – always do the quick reviews online to add to your points total!) so bought myself another tube of Model Co More Brows. I love this stuff as it not only adds colour to my fair brows but also contains microfibers to fill in any gaps.

I blogged about my new summer sandals this week and have been wearing them all trying to decide which are the comfiest pair to take on holiday with me next week.

I ordered some new rings this week. I flit between gold and silver jewellery and I love these chunky, silver cut-out rings.

Sunday Summary #33

It has been a slightly hectic week here as we have had new carpets laid in our three bedrooms upstairs. This has meant clearing the rooms of all furniture then moving everything back again! However, we are really pleased with the new carpets and it definitely feels a lot cosier than the laminate flooring we had before.

I have been really getting back into podcasts this week. I’ve spent hours moving furniture around so wanted something to keep me entertained. My friend Holly recommended The Guilty Feminist podcast and I am making my way through the back catalogue. Witty, funny and covering a variety of topics, this is one that makes you laugh and think in equal measure.

Ian and I have also been enjoying My Dad Wrote a Porno. This is a reading of some erotic literature and is laugh-out-loud funny. We listen to this in the car and it definitely helps break up a long car journey!

I’ve signed up for a 5K in September so have been hitting the gym this week and trying to eat quite healthily to get ready for it. Usually I go to the gym after work and it can be quite busy but going in the morning means I get the cardio room almost to myself.

My Timehop this week has been reminding me of our summer holidays spent in America (East Coast last year, West Coast 3 years ago) and it is making me so excited to go away later this month.

This weekend, we headed to the beach again to celebrate the second birthday of my friends’ little girl. We had a lovely few hours in the sun before heading to Bristol for a mate date at Wahaca.

It’s been pretty healthy round these parts. From the blog I have made my lemony chicken and tuna and mixed bean salad and I also made a new tomato and sausage dish which I will share soon.

I also made a massive Spanish omelette to take on our beach picnic.

I found my matte top coat again and painted my nails with this bright blue shade.

My lips have been really dry this week so I have been using a variety of lip products to keep them soft: a coconut water EOS balm, a lip gel from SpaceNK and a toffee lip balm from The Body Shop.

I bought this ‘Avocado Toast’ t-shirt this week and I love it!

I have also been wearing my new Nikes to the gym and they are blindingly bright!
