This weekend, to celebrate 13 years together (how did that happen?!), Ian and I popped into Bath and decided to try out Absurd Bird, a new chicken restaurant recently opened in the town centre.
It wasn’t that busy when we went in and I don’t think it is completely clear what aesthetic they are going for. It is very dark inside with several booths and a large central bar. Upon closer inspection, it is meant to be a kind of Deep South theme with this reflected by some items on the menu too.
We started out with some of the house IPA (a great beer) and had a look at the menu. We decided to go for a few sides to share with some buffalo chicken wings.
Now we were pretty hungry but boy did we over-order!!! In retrospect, our waiter really should have said something but it did mean we had some doggy bags to take home which did us for two more meals. I am used to chicken wings being a couple of bites but these ones were huge!
We both love buffalo chicken wings and order them every time we are in America – it’s one of those meals that just sums up a place for me so when I saw them on the menu, served with blue cheese sauce, I knew we had to try them. Luckily, they were fab! Spicy, tangy and really succulent, these were good wings, probably the best I’ve tried outside of the States.
On the side we had jalapeno mac ‘n’ cheese (served with herbed crumbs and very cheesy, if a little stodgy), fried pickles (delicious and in a really light batter) and skinny fries.
Overall, the food here was really good. The cocktail list looked amazing too so it was a shame I was driving! I would definitely be aware of the generously-sized portions although the staff were really helpful bagging leftovers up for us to take home. I’d definitely return here in the future.
