Farewell Dry January – Hello Boozy February!

We made it! Ian and I very bravely attempted to give up booze for January and midnight last night marked the end of this. We went out to see Russell Kane’s new stand-up show (he was brilliant!) so were still up and about at midnight and couldn’t resist a celebratory beer.

We didn’t really need to give up but I think we had overindulged throughout Christmas and New Year and were both kind of curious to see if we could do it and how much we would miss it. It has been interesting. I was fine for the first few weeks but there were moments when we would both crave a glass of red when we went out for dinner or an ice cold beer whilst watching the football.

The only thing I missed, and it seems a bit silly when it’s written down, was the social side of ‘going for a drink’. We usually pop up to our local pub on Friday nights for a few G&Ts but didn’t do this throughout the whole of January. Going out for a coke didn’t seem to have the same appeal as a beer – maybe this is because I see an alcoholic drink as more of a treat, but I missed these weekly visits and look forward to them starting up again!

We both received some lovely bottles of alcohol for Christmas that we weren’t able to open last month so I am looking forward to my bottle of Baileys and Ian definitely can’t wait to work his way through the various bottles of ale that have been taunting him all through January!

Just like when you give up chocolate or something similar for lent, I can see us over-indulging on the drinks front for the next few weeks, having a little glass of all the things we couldn’t last month. I know I’ll have to be careful though – I was already quite a lightweight and after a month of no alcohol my midnight beer went straight to my head last night!

Anyway, to those fellow Dryathletes who made it through Dry January…I salute you and cheers! x

About hannahhotcakes

My name is Hannah. I live near Bath in a lovely village in the Cotswolds with my husband Ian, the love of my life for the past 10 years, in our dream cottage. I have landed my dream job as a primary school teacher and I can’t think of anything else I would rather be doing. I am a self-confessed foodie and I love to cook, bake, and eat out as much as possible. Here are some things I love: My friends and family, travelling, fresh flowers, good books, having breakfast on my balcony, horror films, Christmas, tea, Las Vegas, lie-ins, red wine, Liverpool FC, music, sausage dogs, Spain, rare steak, fashion, cheese, American TV series and camping. And here are my pet hates: People dressed as animals, whistling, being rushed, being made to wait, girls who act stupid to impress a man, spiders, sunburn and rocket (it comes with EVERYTHING!)
